Punctuation is one of the most important things not only in the English language but also other languages! It can affect the whole meaning of a sentence.

What is the meaning of punctuation?

According to Dictionary.com, the definition of punctuation is:

“the practice or system of using certain conventional marks or characters in writing or printing in order to separate elements and make the meaning clear, as in ending a sentence or separating clauses.”

Punctuation (or sometimes interpunction) is the use of spacing, conventional signs (called punctuation marks), and certain typographical devices as aids to the understanding and correct reading of written text, whether read silently or aloud.

There are 14 punctuation marks that are commonly used in English grammar. They are the period, question mark, exclamation point, comma, semicolon, colon, dash, hyphen, parentheses, brackets, braces, apostrophe, quotation marks, and ellipsis.

In written English, punctuation is vital to disambiguate the meaning of sentences.

Punctuation has the ability to make a sentence have a completely different meaning if the punctuation marks are located in a different part of the sentence. This is why punctuations is considered as a powerful thing in the linguistics world!

For instance, the sentence “eats shoots and leaves” (which means the subject consumes shoots and leaves) and “eats, shoots, and leaves” (which means the subject eats first, then fires a weapon, and then leaves the scene).

So, make sure to always use the correct punctuation in your written documents, books, letters, and even online chats!

Have you ever heard, read, or used the word rendezvous? Do you know what this word means? ❓❓❓

Rendezvous is not like any typical English word. In order to pronounce this word correctly, you have to say: “rahn-de-voo”. Not a lot of people actually know how to the correct way to pronounce this word. It is a unique word that originated from the French language. 🇫🇷

So, what does this word actually mean?

According to Oxford Dictionary, the definition of rendezvous is:

“an arrangement to meet somebody at a particular time and place.”

In other words, rendezvous implies an agreement between two or more people to meet at a certain time and place.
