Grammar 101 – Part 3 (Month 2) – Boring vs Bored

[Linguosco: Delivering Crafted Excellence]

Grammar 101 – Part 3 📖✏⁣ (Month 2)

Boring vs Bored 💬💬💬

Have you ever come across someone who mixes up the words boring and bored wrongly? Have you have heard someone who uses these words incorrectly that may lead to an unwanted misleading or miscommunication? Do you still find it difficult or confusing to differentiate these words?

Every word has its own meaning and function, even the words that are almost identical. It may be fatal if you misuse a word, both in your conversations or written documents. 💬📄

So, what is the difference between bored and boring? ❓❓❓

No worries! As always, we got you covered! 😊👍

First of all, let’s discuss about the basic word that these two words originated from: bore (verb).

According to Oxford Dictionary, bore is “to make somebody feel bored, especially by talking too much.”

📌What does boring mean?

Boring is an ADJECTIVE that means SOMETHING is not interesting or exciting.

For example: “The lesson was so boring that she fell asleep.”

📌 What does bored mean?

Bored is an ADJECTIVE that describes when SOMEONE feels tired and unhappy because something is not interesting or because they have nothing to do.

For example: “She was so bored that she fell asleep.”

Most verbs which express emotions, such as to bore, may use either the present or the past participle as an adjective, but the meaning of the participle is often different.

The words bored and boring have one uncanny thing in common: they are both adjectives. This doesn’t mean that they have the same function. The word bored describes a person’s feeling while the word boring describes something (usually an object or a situation). Make sure that you use the correct word at the right time! 😀👌✅

For instance, the phrase “I’m boring.” indicates that you have a boring and uninteresting personality. However, the phrase “I’m bored.” indicates that you are feeling a sense of boredom. See the difference?

We hope we were able to explain to you about the words boring and bored and clear away the confusion between these two words. It takes a lot of practice and dedication to excel in English grammar. Never stop practicing!⁣ 👍💪✊⁣

Grammar 101 – Part 1 📖✏⁣ (Month 2)

Among vs Amongst 💬💬💬

Have you ever wondered what the difference between among and amongst? Some people say among, while others prefer saying amongst. So, what is the difference between these two words?❓❓❓

According to Dictionary.com, among and amongst are variations of the same word. Among is more common in American English 🇺🇸, while amongst is used almost exclusively in British English 🇬🇧.

Amongst may feel more archaic to speakers of American English, but among is actually the older word, dating back to Old English (circa 1000 CE). Amongst, in comparison, showed up in the language in Middle English (circa 1200 CE). 📜📜📜

Among and amongst are synonyms, sharing the same meaning. Both are propositions that refer to being surrounded by or in the middle of something that serves as the object of the preposition.

Among and amongst are both acceptable and grammatically correct. ✅✅✅

In both speech and writing, among and amongst are interchangeable. Both are grammatically correct and mean the same thing. However, amongst is often considered old-fashioned or pretentious in American English, so you may want to avoid it. The choice between them is largely a matter of stylistic preference. 😀😀😀

Examples of sentences using among and amongst:

Among: “The bees were buzzing among the flowers.”

Amongst: “Amongst the commotion, the police tried to stop the chaos happening around them.”

We hope we were able to explain to you about the words among and amongst. It takes a lot of practice and dedication to excel in English grammar. Never stop practicing!⁣ 👍💪✊⁣

Word of the Week: Part 3 : Whippersnapper!

[Linguosco: Delivering Crafted Excellence]

Word of the Week: Part 3 📖🔍

Word: Whippersnapper 😎✌

Have you ever heard, read, or used the word “whippersnapper”? Nowadays, it is extremely rare to hear this word during conversations, especially amongst children, teens or young adults. Do you know what this word means?

According to Oxford Dictionary, the definition of whippersnapper is:

“a young and unimportant person who behaves in a way that others think is too confident and rude.”

Whippersnapper (originally the hyphenate whipper-snapper) is a rather archaic term for a young, cheeky, presemptuous person. 🚶🏃

Whippersnapper was originally from United Kingdom and was often used in the 17th century. It is pejoratively refers to young, loud, brash boys. One theory is that it comes from the fact that newly made whips (made from “young”, fresh leather) create a very loud, crisp snap. It was also a term used for someone noisy and unimportant. 👦💬🔊

Whippersnapper is derived from the habit of young layabouts who hung around snapping whips to past the time. It is usually applied by elders (e.g. grandparents) to people who are regarded as “upstart” children or young adults. 👴👵➡👦👧

Kosakata Kamis Part.1 (Agustus 2020)!

Kosakata Kamis: Part 1 📖🔍

Kata 1: dikarenakan

Menurut @ivanlanin (pendiri @narabahasa) melalui akun twitternya:

kosakata

“Bentuk “dikarenakan” keliru.
