Let’s discuss about the basic word of this adjective first: Pun.
What is a pun?
According to Dictionary.com, the definition of pun is:
“the humorous use of a word or phrase so as to emphasize or suggest its different meanings or applications, or the use of words that are alike or nearly alike in sound but different in meaning; a play on words.”
Someone or something that uses or consists of a pun is punny. Being punny is usually intended by someone for humor purposes. A pun is considered as a clever joke by most people because it requires more thinking than other types of jokes. The unique part of a pun is that not everyone is going to understand it. It depends on the person’s general knowledge.
Other definition of pun:
“The pun, also called paronomasia, is a form of word play that exploits multiple meanings of a term, or of similar-sounding words, for an intended humorous or rhetorical effect.”
Nowadays, puns are very popular. Many people make memes using puns. Some say that people enjoy puns in memes because puns can be somewhat challenging to understand. People can be curious if they don’t understand those puns. As a result, they will research about those puns to understand them. Thus, they can gain some knowledge from those punny memes!
